The Times of India presented awards to three most promising young Carnatic singers in the city. Srinivasa Ramanujam shares his opinion and the judges’ views on the programme.
Whoever thought that youth participation in Carnatic music was decreasing these days should have been present during the judging of the Times Thyagaraja Awards – they would have instantly changed their mind! For, going by the bundle of talent among Chennai’s youngsters, Carnatic music indeed has a great future ahead.
“It’s in safe hands,” said leading vocalist Aruna Sairam, who was one of the judges, “The kind of talent that was showcased in the Times Thyagaraja Awards is proofof that. Some of the contestants were brilliant and have a great future ahead of them. Mark my words – they’ll make it as big singers in the future.”
