Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar, the musical icon of the 1960’s , introduced traditional Indian ragas to the western audiences. He composed his first new raga in 1945 and began a prolific recording career. He is a recipient of the Bharat Ratna award in 1999 and a three time Grammy award winner. We can never forget his characteristic sitar sound, with powerful bass notes and a serene and spiritual touch in the alap movement of a raga. Ravi Shankar passed away yesterday at San Diego at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife Sukanya Shankar and daughter Anoushka Shankar. His last performance was at California on November 4th. His infectious energy which would electrify the whole atmosphere will be missed by all.
