The veteran thavil artiste Thiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam and the carnatic vocalist-violinist duo Ranjani and Gayathri were honoured with the ‘P Obul Reddy and P Gnanambal Memorial Award’, for their immense contribution towards bettering carnatic music, at a cultural festival held by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here recently. The awards carried a cash prize of `1 lakh, a medallion, a citation and a shawl.

The gathering on the occasion was an august one, including the chief guest, British Deputy High Commissioner to Chennai, Bharat Joshi. The function was followed by a carnatic vocal concert by the noted artiste and disciple of yesteryear doyen M L Vasanthakumari, Sudha Raghunathan.
