Two Bharatnatyam troupes and a Kathak ensemble have made it to the lineup of the 34th annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, running June 2-July 1 at various venues in the city. All three groups are audience favorites returning to this year’s festival. The Chhandam Youth Dance Company, presenting talented students from Chitresh Das’s world famous Kathak school, will perform a piece entitled “Uttarakaala” (Future) June 16 and 17. Members of the Vishwa Shanthi Dance Academy, led by South Bay danseuse Shreelata Suresh, will perform June 30. Their work will portray Queen Shantala Devi’s devotion and passion for dance as it magically gives life to sculptures in an abandoned temple.
